As I write this, I am sitting in my office which is now also my bedroom, my closet, and a storage space for various musical instruments, all my throw rugs, and two extra mattresses. We are renovating our upstairs bathroom, so my household is in upheaval. Furniture is pushed into corners, huddled in tight clusters. The living room has sheets of drywall leaning against the wall. The floors are covered in brown paper. There is a plastic curtain surrounding the construction site. Bare wires...
They live across the hallway of an apartment block from each other. Both women are widows and they are inseparable. Over the last few years we have come to know them. The older of the two was a manager for a trailer park, until she moved into the apartment 3 years ago. I remember the day my friend Robert and I took communion with her and invited her to respond to the love of Jesus for the first time... more
I talked with Nora today...
Nora's an older woman who lives on the streets and pushes a shopping cart that holds all of her earthly possessions...perhaps you've seen her in your town. Her face shows the mileage of street life and pain she's experienced over the years.
It's her pain, really, that brings her to our neighbourhood. Both her mother and father tragically ended their lives a number of years... more
God, in Jesus, moved into our neighborhood. Jesus came and shared His life with us where we lived.
The incarnational life is about living where you live. It is about engaging emotionally with the people around you in your real life, in the place you work, live and play. It is also engaging in the challenges and hopes of a geographical area... called your neighborhood.

I have been on many mission trips in my life time... maybe too many! But I have never been on a mission's trip of this sort. On one level it felt unlike any mission's trip I had encountered and on another level it felt like I was finally doing real missions for the first time.

The place was our business. A business forged... more
Here is where my ache is exposed... a deep longing to see the beauty and power of the risen Christ be set apart from all else and completely win out in every circumstance. This is the catalyst for our work, here, in Nelson, to deeply embed ourselves into the lives of the pre-Christian. We then try to live out the life of Jesus and hope deeply for any opportunity to present Him in and through our... more
All six of us were invited to join her and her two children for a visit in her living room. Brian and I from Canada, Bruce from the U.K. and three others from the Philippines.
Her home is two 8 x 8 rooms on top of each other put together with found materials. The ceiling of the first floor is about 5 feet off the ground.
Her home, surrounded by many other similar homes, is in the middle of the... more
As we waited at the home of Ben & Rachana Isaacs, the escort vehicle arrived to transport us all for dinner. I am not sure if I have ever been picked up in an escort vehicle for dinner before, never mind for dinner in Silguri, India. After swerving our way through traffic, rickshaws, tuk tuks, cows and people on the streets of Siliguri, we eventually arrived at the former Deputy Minister of the... more
His grandfather moved from Southern China to the Highlands of Northern Thailand to grow opium, hoping to capture a piece of the lucrative opium trade between Great Britain and China. Two generations cultivated this nutrient rich soil carefully tending the opium plants as they emerged from the soil. Once the opium poppy's bloomed the opium tears, the dried latex in the poppy, were extracted from these... more
163 days is close to 6 months. Could you imagine calling and inviting a community to fast and pray for 163 days...? and that they would actually join you and do it? Silas, the pastor of the Namchi Vineyard, was once a political rebel and one of the leaders of a resistance group in the 1980s in the district of Darjeeling in Northeast India. Kalimpong is a hub area in the district of Darjeeling. Ben... more
